racconto breve e quindi non impegnativo. buono come trama e svolgimento. consilio la lettura a chi, come me, la sera é stanco e non vuole impegnarsi troppo.

This is my third in the Commissario Germano series, and the best yet. I have been studying Italian for a number of years, and love reading mysteries (gialli) in Italian. Ruggeri is a young writer, but very skilled at quickly drawing the reader into the plot. His main character, Vincent Germano is a man of integrity, a family man, and an intuitive thinker and problem solver. Excellent read, not dumbed down, with sentences that I often have to read twice, but it is helpful to my understanding of Italian grammar and syntax. I subsequently read it a second time for fluidity, and appreciated the abrupt foreshadowing that I missed in the first read. My only criticism is that I would like to see more development of the secondary characters such as Germano's wife and Parisi, his compatriot.

Ruggeri's mysteries are all about the plot with almost no character development. However, the interplay among the policemen is entertaining and the dialog is lively, as is the pace of the story. One rather disturbing feature is the fast and efficient operation of the police effort and its smooth interaction with the carabinieri and the guardia. I've lived in Italy and this doesn't strike me as very Italian, though it does help to keep the plot moving. A nice feature of Ruggeri's extensive use of dialog is that his Italian is pretty easy, though I don't think he's making an effort to produce an "easy Italian" style, it's just that dialog uses simpler grammar and more limited vocabulary than description. That makes these books good material for students of the language.

The ending seemed to be a little week. The motive could have been better explained, also the relationship of the murderer to the victim. These faults may have been a result of my ineptitude in translation.

leggero. scorrevole. scritto bene. consigliato peruna piacevola lettura di un fine settimana o nel tram per andare a lavoro
